Understanding Lipedema

Start with what no one ever explained to you.

Most patients have spent years being told it was their fault. Education is the first form of care we offer.

Could what you have actually be lipedema?

Answer 5 quick questions. We’ll tell you how closely your symptoms match the clinical criteria, and what to do next.

Is the swelling symmetric on both sides of your body, both legs and both arms?

Lipedema almost always appears symmetrically. Asymmetric swelling usually points elsewhere.

Are your feet and hands spared while your legs or arms accumulate fat?

The classic “cuff” or “bracelet” effect at the ankles or wrists is a strong lipedema indicator.

Have diet and exercise failed to reduce the affected areas, even when you lost weight elsewhere?

Lipedema fat is biochemically resistant to standard weight loss methods.

Are the affected areas painful or tender to touch, and do you bruise easily?

Pain and easy bruising distinguish lipedema from ordinary fat accumulation.

Did the changes begin or worsen during a hormonal event, such as puberty, pregnancy, or menopause?

Lipedema is hormonally triggered and almost exclusively affects women.

Common Questions

Answers to what patients ask us most.

How is lipedema different from being overweight?
Lipedema fat is biologically distinct from obesity fat. It is symmetric, painful, resistant to diet and exercise, and almost always involves the legs and arms while sparing the feet and hands. A proper diagnosis requires a clinician trained to recognize the specific tissue characteristics.
Will insurance cover lipedema surgery?
Coverage varies by carrier and stage. We submit claims on your behalf, provide detailed medical documentation, and have a billing team that walks you through every option, including CareCredit, Alphaeon, and in-house financing.
What does “lymph-sparing” surgery actually mean?
Standard liposuction can damage the lymphatic vessels, which is dangerous for lipedema patients, who often already have compromised lymphatic flow. Lymph-sparing techniques use specialized cannulas and approach angles designed to preserve lymphatic structures while removing diseased fat.
How many surgeries will I need?
Most patients need 2 to 4 staged procedures depending on their stage and the body areas affected. We never rush this. Surgeries are spaced 6 to 12 weeks apart to allow for proper healing. Some patients are best served by conservative care alone.
Do I need to travel to Scottsdale for treatment?
Yes. Surgery and in-person evaluations happen at our Scottsdale practice. The good news: qualified out-of-state patients receive free round-trip flights, hotel, and airport transport. Our patient concierge handles every detail.
How much pain or downtime should I expect after surgery?
Most patients describe the discomfort as soreness similar to an intense workout. Recovery depends on the anesthesia approach used; an awake tumescent technique generally avoids a general-anesthesia recovery period, but the right approach is decided with your surgeon. Most women return to desk work within 3 to 5 days and to full activity in 4 to 6 weeks. Compression garments are worn 24/7 for the first 6 weeks.
Will I develop lymphedema from the surgery?
Our lymph-sparing technique is specifically designed to preserve the lymphatic system, and your individual risk is discussed during your consultation. We co-manage every surgical patient with a certified lymphedema therapist to minimize risk further.
Is there an age limit for treatment?
No. Our youngest patient was 19, our oldest 78. Stage and overall health matter more than chronological age. Dr. Hall has performed successful surgery on women well into their seventies. Conservative care is appropriate at any age.
How is this different from cosmetic liposuction or a BBL?
Cosmetic liposuction is performed for body contouring on healthy fat tissue. Lipedema surgery is a medical treatment for diseased fat tissue with compromised lymphatic flow. The techniques, instruments, anesthesia, staging, and aftercare are entirely different. Cosmetic surgeons rarely have the specialized training required.
What if I’m not a candidate for surgery?
Many patients do exceptionally well with conservative care alone, especially at Stage 1 and 2. We never push surgery. About 30% of patients who come to us are best served by our non-surgical program. Dr. Hall will give you a direct, honest recommendation at consult.
